News and Press Releases Dr. Aaron T. Beck Receives 2004 Grawemeyer AwardRichard C. Bedrosian, Ph.D. December 4, 2003 - Aaron T. Beck, M.D. is the 2004 recipient of the Grawemeyer Award for Psychology. The Grawemeyer Award is given each year to recognize extraordinary achievement in Psychology, Music Composition, Religion, Education, and Ideas for Improving World Order. Dr. Beck, a University Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, is commonly referred to as the "Father of Cognitive Therapy". He has had an enormous worldwide impact on the practice of psychotherapy. Dr. Beck has played a major role in the professional careers of thousands of mental health professionals, including Dr. Richard Bedrosian, the President of MySelfHelp.com, who was personally trained and supervised by him for two years. A news article about the award stated "Four decades ago, Beck challenged the prevailing views of Freudian psychotherapy to establish the field of cognitive psychotherapy........ His extraordinary contribution was to turn things on their head - not that emotions can drive thought but that thoughts can drive emotions." Dr. Beck has stated that he will use the prize money ($200,000) to help fund pioneering research on cognitive therapy for schizophrenia.
