On Thursday, October 7, 2004, MySelfHelp.com will offer free, anonymous mental
health screenings for a range of common emotional difficulties that often go
undiagnosed
and misunderstood. Screenings for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder,
generalized anxiety disorder, and bipolar disorder will be held at 184 Otis
Street in Northborough, Massachusetts (next to Wal-Mart) from 11:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. In addition, information will be provided on how to manage stress
and recognize the physical symptoms that often go hand-in-hand with mental
health disorders.
“
Over the past ten years we have made great strides in reducing the stigma attached
to mental illness. Programs like National Depression Screening Day educate
people about depressive and anxiety disorders and allow people to seek help
in a non-threatening way. These problems respond extremely well to treatment,
so the sooner people recognize them, the sooner they can experience relief.” said
Richard Bedrosian, Ph.D., clinical psychologist, and president of MySelfHelp.com.
Dr. Bedrosian, who has over 25 years of clinical and research experience, also
noted that many people do not realize that they suffer from depression. Depression
in males often goes undiagnosed and untreated, he said, because they may experience
more anger and irritability than sadness.
As part of the program, attendees will receive educational materials, complete
a written self-assessment, and have the opportunity to talk privately with
a mental health professional. The program is free for all those who attend
and is completely confidential.
National Depression Screening Day, held in October as part of Mental Illness
Awareness Week, is a program of the nonprofit organization, Screening
for Mental Health, Inc. Screenings will be held across the country at approximately
5,000
screening sites, including hospitals, mental health clinics, colleges,
and primary care offices.
MySelfHelp.com offers a growing family of highly interactive, easy-to-use
online programs featuring user-customizable exercises, tools, and resources
designed
to speed recovery and promote well being.
“
Our self-help programs are designed to improve the effectiveness of clinical
therapy by providing accurate, supporting medical information, exercises, and
learning activities,” said Dr. Bedrosian. “These comprehensive
programs establish a sense of community among subscribers while ensuring confidentiality
by allowing subscribers to remain anonymous.”
MySelfHelp.com is funded and supported by the National Institute of Mental
Health and staffed by a team of highly experienced and reputable health care
professionals and other experts who are devoted to helping people improve the
quality of their lives. Over the past five years, MySelfHelp.com has received
over $1.8 million in funding from the National Institute of Mental Health and
the National Institute on Aging to develop self-help programs on depression,
bereavement, and eating disorders.
